I've bought more online courses than I'd like to admit, and for years most of them sat at 12% complete. When I finally started finishing them, it came down to a handful of boring, unglamorous habits.
What actually worked
- A fixed time, not a fixed goal. "Study for 30 minutes at 8pm" beat "finish module 4" every single time.
- Notes in my own words. If I couldn't rephrase it, I hadn't learned it.
- One course at a time. Three half-finished courses taught me less than one finished one.
- Build as you go. I paused videos to try things immediately, before the momentum faded.
- Show up on the bad days. Ten tired minutes still kept the streak alive.
None of this is clever. That's kind of the point. The people who finish courses aren't more disciplined than you β they've just removed the decisions that used to trip them up.
